About this Little Brown Dog release
This Braeval 16 Year Old from Little Brown Dog is a quietly distinctive Speyside single malt that leans into both rarity and personality. Distilled on 2 February 2010 and bottled on 11 February 2026, this release has been matured entirely in a single white port barrique - which is pretty special.
Braeval is not often encountered as a single malt, typically appearing in blends, and when it does surface independently, it tends to show a light, clean, and gently fruity profile. That makes it an ideal candidate for more experimental cask types. In this case, full-term maturation in white port wood creates a whisky that is both fruity and dry, with a subtle mineral edge that sets it apart from more traditional sherry or bourbon expressions.
White port casks are rare in Scotch whisky, and their influence is distinctive. Rather than heavy sweetness, they tend to bring lifted orchard fruit, gentle honeyed tones, and a slightly vinous freshness - all of which are evident here. There’s also a personal connection behind this release, with the cask style echoing an early project from Little Brown Dog’s formative years, adding an extra layer of meaning to the bottling.
On the nose, honeydew melon, clear gummy sweets, and fresh hay create a bright, almost nostalgic opening. The palate is fresh and slightly sharper, with green apple skins, tarte au poire, and quince jelly, offering both fruit and structure. The finish is elegant and slightly decadent, with echoes of white Burgundy and a creamy milk chocolate note that lingers pleasantly.
Bottled at cask strength (57.3% ABV), with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a whisky that feels both playful and considered. With an outturn of 332 bottles, it’s a rare opportunity to explore Braeval through a genuinely unusual maturation style - one that rewards curiosity and offers something genuinely different within the Speyside category.
