Sutherland 35 Year Old Tasting Notes
Nose: Elegant and expressive on the nose, with bright tropical fruit notes leading the way, supported by a fresh lift of cooling mint. Gentle herbal balms and light oily tones bring added depth, giving the aroma a layered, polished character that suggests both richness and maturity.
Palate: Rich and full in texture, the palate has a weighty, mouth-coating feel, revealing flavours of ripe mango, pineapple, and soft stone fruits. These sit alongside hints of aged leather and well-seasoned oak, with faint earthy notes and a touch of warming spice adding complexity to an already deeply satisfying dram.
Finish: Long and composed on the finish, with vibrant fruit notes slowly softening into a gentle sweetness. Subtle oak spice and a lingering warmth remain, leaving a refined and balanced impression that carries on well after the last sip.
About this Rare Find whisky
This 35-year-old Sutherland from Gleann Mór Spirits is a rare and beautifully mature Highland single malt, released under the Rare Find label — a range reserved for casks that show exceptional character after long ageing.
Distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2026, this whisky spent its full maturation in a refill hogshead (cask 724), a cask type often chosen for long ageing because it allows the spirit to develop slowly without excessive wood influence. Over three and a half decades, the whisky has evolved into something layered and elegant, where distillery character, time, and gentle oak all sit in careful balance.
“Sutherland” is a name often used for highly regarded northern Highland malt, and extended maturation in refill wood has allowed the spirit’s natural fruitiness and waxy texture to remain intact while gaining depth and refinement. Rather than heavy oak, the whisky shows the kind of maturity that only time can bring — polished, expressive, and quietly complex.
On the nose, bright tropical fruits lead the way, lifted by cooling mint and soft herbal balms, with light oily notes adding a sense of richness. The palate is full and mouth-coating, revealing mango, pineapple, and soft stone fruits, followed by hints of aged leather, seasoned oak, and a gentle earthy spice. The finish is long and composed, with fruit sweetness gradually fading into subtle oak warmth and lingering spice.
Bottled at cask strength (49.2% ABV), with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a whisky that shows maturity without heaviness — refined rather than forceful. With an outturn of just 99 bottles, it stands as a rare opportunity to experience a long-aged Highland malt in its purest form.
A luxurious dram, and a fine example of what patient maturation in refill wood can achieve.
