Lochindaal 16 Year Old Tasting Notes

Nose: Sweet smoke from a bonfire on a beach fills the lungs. The peat and medicinal notes are superbly intertwined with citrus notes on the nose. With water, hints of chocolate and caramel.

Palate: The ‘sweet & peat’ mixes tremendously. Tropical fruits like apricots, oranges, lemon along with a slight maltiness and sea salt and of course peat. With water, it becomes creamier but also with hints of pepper and cinnamon joining the medley. What a treat!

Finish: A very long, lingering finish just prolongs the enjoyment.

About this Tri Carragh whisky

Tri Carragh presents this Lochindaal 16 Year Old, distilled in 2009 at Bruichladdich Distillery and drawn from a first fill bourbon barrel, yielding just 215 bottles. “Lochindaal” is the name used for one of Bruichladdich’s rarer spirit styles — a medium-peated whisky that bridges the gap between the gentle elegance of Bruichladdich and the intense smokiness of Port Charlotte and Octomore. The result is a whisky that perfectly captures the soul of Islay: maritime, smoky, and full of life.

Bottled at cask strength (57.8%), with natural colour and no chill filtration, this single cask shows how pure bourbon maturation can highlight both the sweet and smoky sides of Islay peat.

The nose opens with sweet bonfire smoke drifting across a sea breeze, mingling with citrus notes of lemon and orange peel. With water, richer hints of chocolate and caramel unfold. On the palate, the “sweet and peat” combination shines: tropical fruits such as apricots and oranges balance beautifully against sea salt, malt, and gentle smoke. With a splash of water, the texture becomes creamier, revealing soft pepper and cinnamon warmth. The finish is long, smoky, and lingering - the kind that keeps calling you back for another sip.

A stunning expression of Islay’s character, this Lochindaal combines sweetness, spice, and coastal smoke in perfect harmony. A true treat for fans of Bruichladdich’s peated spirit.

The Three Pillars

Tri Carragh

Tri Carragh is Gaelic for ‘three pillars’. It’s a nod and celebration to the three fundamental core ingredients which are used in the creation of whisky. Water, barley and yeast have been used for centuries to produce Scotland’s finest spirit. When put through their paces, left to rest for years in an oak cask, they create a unique liquid, every single time. Independent bottler Tri Carragh select their single cask whiskies in a thoughtful manner, choosing the distillery and spirit which will encourage the most conversation.
