Caol Ila 10 Year Old Tasting Notes

Woody's tasting notes

Nose: Smoked tea, varnished oak, coastal peat, lemon candy, praline, cloves, plums.

Palate: Thick and sticky, strong maritime smoke, dark cherry jam, black coffee, eucalyptus, leather, medicinal aromas, teriyaki biltong and much more goodness.

Finish: Long and spicy, liquorice, tobacco leaves, espresso, toasted oak, fading fruit notes.

Ed's review

Colour: Bright gold. Thick in the glass with a rim of tight beads slowly developing into tears.

Nose: A long fire on the beach to warm the hands from the ocean spray. A minerality from beach pebbles and a citrus lemon note.

Palate: Full mouthfeel with a wonderful texture. Earthy peat smoke dances with lemon peel. Mocha coffee and fruit and nut milk chocolate. Alcohol is well integrated.

Finish: Long finish. Peat smoke moves into beach pebbles and ends with bright spice.

Overall: A fantastic single malt from one of my favourite distilleries. Really delicious.

Woodrow's of Edinburgh adds a vibrant 10-year-old Caol Ila single malt to their Warehouse Reserve range, crafted by founder Woody Tan. Distilled on March 20, 2013, and bottled on September 18, 2023, this Islay whisky was matured in a refill hogshead before finishing for one year in a Palo Cortado sherry cask (cask 305284). Bottled at a bold cask strength of 57.6%, with natural colour and no chill filtration, it showcases a balanced yet powerful character. With an outturn of just 293 bottles, this is a limited release for those who appreciate the distinctive charm of Islay whiskies.

How much is shipping?

Shipping charges are calculated during checkout, depending on where you live and how many bottles you’re buying. It's usually more cost effective to ship two or more bottles, particularly for international orders. The perfect excuse to treat yourself to an extra bottle!

What about taxes?

All alcoholic products sold by TopWhiskies are sold subject to UK alcohol tax, which is already included in the price.

UK sales are subject to VAT (currently 20%), which is included in the price. Sales outside of the UK are not subject to this tax, and international prices do not include it.

We use a specialist US shipper who sorts out US taxes. These costs are factored into the US shipping charges. So shipping may look pricey, but remember it covers your taxes as well, so there'll be no further bills to pay.

For all other territories, including those in Europe, please note: your order could be subject to local sales taxes and duties upon arrival in the destination country. All additional charges are the responsibility of the recipient. Which couriers do you use?

In the UK we use Royal Mail, Parcelforce and APC. US orders are sent via UPS. International orders use FedEx and DHL. Orders are despatched from our UK warehouse Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays.

Carbon neutral?

Yes, all our deliveries are carbon neutral. We work with Planet to estimate the carbon impact of each delivery, and then purchase carbon removal credits to offset the emissions.

Meet The Founder

Woody Tan

Originally from Hong Kong, Woody Tan has lived in Scotland since 2011. He studied an MSc in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University, and then went into the cask trade and warehouse keeping. While looking after casks, he started to discover gems that he felt had to be shared with fellow whisky lovers. He bottles these special casks under his Woodrow’s of Edinburgh label.

Woody has an excellent palate, and a knack for uncovering really flavoursome casks. He’s also a wizard when it comes to cask experiments, and has released some interesting cask-finished whiskies.
