Ledaig 16 Year Old Tasting Notes

Official tasting notes

Nose: Warm vanilla, sweet smoke, orchard fruit.

Palate: Tropical, oily and rich, peat explosion!

Finish: Orange, brown sugar, lingering tobacco.

Ed's review

Colour: Natural colour, straw. Lots of oily legs slide down the side of my glass.

Nose: Sticky honey glazed ham. Barbecued pineapple - fresh and juicy, yet caramelised and charred. Chilli, oil and vinegar dipping sauce. A faint grassy note.

Palate: Medium mouthfeel. Sweet and spicy glazed pork ribs, smokey from the BBQ. More peat smoke. Orange, papaya and pineapple. Oak and warming spice.

Finish: Medium to long. Dark gingerbread decorated with dried orange, Christmas spice, and brown sugar. A savoury, smokey note that lingers on the tongue.

An awesome whisky.

About This Murray McDavid Whisky

Overlooking the fishing harbour on the Isle of Mull, Tobermory Distillery produces both unpeated and heavily peated spirit. The latter is bottled under the distillery’s original name, Ledaig (pronounced lay-chack). This rich, oily single malt spent its final years in a special rum cask from Diamond Distillery, in Guyana.

For the last 30 months, Murray McDavid's Whisky Creations Team has waited with anticipation to share this brilliantly boisterous single malt with whisky lovers across the UK.

Meet The Whiskymaker

Dean Jode

Dean Jode is Head of Whisky Creations at Murray McDavid. Dean usually starts with single cask whiskies that have been filled into refill casks. He believes the oak cask is the most important factor when creating exceptionally balanced and delicious whisky. So a big part of Dean’s job is searching for the very best quality casks from around the world to re-rack whiskies into.

Dean builds relationships with fellow producers of exceptional drinks by importing their freshly emptied casks for the additional maturation of our ever-growing inventory of Scotch whisky. Using these casks fresh is of key importance. This is where Dean creates not only beautiful spirit colour but more importantly enriches the spirit’s character to create a dram with an exceptional depth of flavour.

Within the traditional whisky warehouses at Coleburn, Dean monitors each and every cask to capture the perfect moment when the nature of the cask has perfectly intertwined with its resting spirit.
