About this Little Brown Dog release

A little gift to you, from the wonderful folk at Little Brown Dog. And, something incredibly fun and interesting, at that.

Taking their popular and highly regarded Wee Mongrel blended rum, they filled two maple syrup casks at the beginning of the year. After 8 months in these rich and incredibly fun casks, the rum had transformed into an absolute maple delight.

Little Brown Dog have previous form with maple syrup casks. Two years ago they won best cask aged gin for #projectQUERCUSACER, their gin matured in maple syrup casks. Being unable to use this specific cask type for Scotch whisky, they thought the rum would be an excellent pairing and, having seen people’s faces light up when they try this, they were right!

Start with good rum, aged 8 to 15 years in refill bourbon barrels, from Panama, Venezuela and the Dominican republic. Then a further 8 months in the maple syrup casks.

The fresh wood gives an intoxicating aroma of maple syrup and almost a slight smokiness. It’s like drinking dessert, and they didn’t have to add artificial flavourings, sugar or colour to do this. Just let the maturation do its job.

How much is shipping?

Shipping charges are calculated during checkout, depending on where you live and how many bottles you’re buying. It's usually more cost effective to ship two or more bottles, particularly for international orders. The perfect excuse to treat yourself to an extra bottle!

What about taxes?

All alcoholic products sold by TopWhiskies are sold subject to UK alcohol tax, which is already included in the price.

UK sales are subject to VAT (currently 20%), which is included in the price. Sales outside of the UK are not subject to this tax, and international prices do not include it.

We use a specialist US shipper who sorts out US taxes. These costs are factored into the US shipping charges. So shipping may look pricey, but remember it covers your taxes as well, so there'll be no further bills to pay.

For all other territories, including those in Europe, please note: your order could be subject to local sales taxes and duties upon arrival in the destination country. All additional charges are the responsibility of the recipient. As customs policies vary widely from country to country, TopWhiskies has no control over these charges, so you should contact your local customs office for further information. If you refuse to pay any import duties and taxes, this could result in the goods being destroyed by customs or being returned back to us - any refund offered would include a deduction of our costs.

Which couriers do you use?

In the UK we use Royal Mail, Parcelforce and APC. US orders are sent via UPS. International orders use FedEx and DHL. Orders are despatched from our UK warehouse Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays.

Carbon neutral?

Yes, all our deliveries are carbon neutral. We work with Planet to estimate the carbon impact of each delivery, and then purchase carbon removal credits to offset the emissions.

Meet The Founders

Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid

Little Brown Dog Spirits was founded by Dr Andrew Smith and Chris Reid. They run an independent bottler and micro-distillery based in rural Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

They take their name from Andrew’s beloved dog, whose nickname was the little brown dog. She followed him everywhere on all his distillery visits and was his constant companion. She passed away in 2022 aged 15 but lives on in spirit. Two more little brown dogs, Winnie and Peedie joined the team in 2020 and 2023.

Chris and Andrew started Little Brown Dog in 2018. Based on Chris’s farm they combine a passion for their surrounding area with in-depth knowledge (read intense geekery!) of distilling and cask maturation.
