Bal Masque Tasting Notes

Official tasting notes

Forbidden orchard fruits abound and entwine on the tongue. There are sweet sensory spices, raisins, vanilla and nutmeg. In the background there are subtle notes of toasted almonds and incense.

Ed's review

Colour: Natural colour; dark amber to light copper. Clings to the side of my glass, with legs that run down the side of the glass.

Nose: Dark red fruits in syrup. Red apples and plums in the fruit bowl. Sticky dates in a walnut loaf. Linseed oil soaking into freshly sanded mahogany. Alcohol is well integrated with no burn.

Palate: Forest fruit compote and plum pudding. Dark chocolate with orange and chilli. Black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg. Alcohol is well integrated.

Finish: Red fruits, spiced nut mix, warming towards the end.

About This Whiskymaker's Edition

The Whiskymaker’s Editions is a series of one-off whiskies. They showcase the sense of adventure of Lakes Distillery's whiskymaker – Dhavall Gandhi. The Whiskymaker's Editions range is one of The Lakes Distillery's core collections.

Each Edition is an exceptional diversion from The Lakes sherry-led house style. It is an expression of creative freedom. The product of a playground where instinct, experience and inspiration roam free.

Complex and aromatic, Bal Masque bears mystery and seduction in its depths. Flavours and aromas mingle like masked revellers. There are featherlight touches, coquettish flourishes and always the promise of more. It reminds you of exploring unchartered territories beyond expectations.

The beauty of Bal Masque derives from the mercurial, not the obvious. The whiskmaker employs untold guile, wisdom, wit and panache. He conducts enigmatic French oak casks to create a seductive, mysterious character.
