Review of That Boutique-y Whisky Company Peerless Rye Whiskey (Batch 1)

Today we’re reviewing a 3 year old straight rye whiskey from Peerless Distillery bottled by That Boutique-y Whisky Company. 

Peerless Whiskey was first established in the late 1800s, when rye whiskey was the go-to spirit in America. Peerless enjoyed initial success but, as with many American distilleries, hit harder times through WW1 and Prohibition. Ultimately, when owner Henry Kraver died in 1938, Peerless Distillery closed. However, the brand has been recently resurrected by the great-grandson, and great-great-grandson, of Henry Kraver who restarted distilling in 2014.

This straight rye whiskey is a release of 406 bottles at 49.1% from independent bottler That Boutique-y Whisky Company, as their Batch 1 from Peerless Distillery. The mash bill for this whiskey was unmalted rye, malted barley, and corn. It was matured in a high quality virgin American oak cask made by Peerless Distillery’s local cooperage; and this particular cask was cherry-picked for That Boutique-y Whisky Company.

Tasting notes for Boutique-y’s Peerless Rye Whiskey (Batch 1)

Colour: Natural; golden. Subtle legs that develop slowly before sinking down my copita glass.

Nose: A spicy nose with notes of rye, marzipan, and vanilla followed by dry roasted peanuts and a slight menthol mintiness. 

Palate: Medium mouthfeel. A rye bread characteristic. Toffee, and milk chocolate covered peanuts. Vanilla and wood spice from the virgin oak casks. Alcohol is warming, in a pleasant way that works well for the spicy character of rye.

Finish: Long, warming, spicy finish with more of that menthol mintiness.

Review of Boutique-y’s Peerless Rye Whiskey (Batch 1)

A most enjoyable rye whiskey from That Boutique-y Whisky Company. It has many of those classic characteristics we may look for: rye character, a slight menthol mintiness, and vanilla from virgin oak. It is well put together and presented at an ABV that works well. Well worth trying, whether your new to rye, or well versed.
